When you have a team of highly-qualified professionals working on a project, great things can happen. There’s no doubt that the combined expertise and motivation of a team of skilled individuals can come together to produce amazing results, but if the management of the project itself is weak or suffering, everything can grind to a screeching halt pretty quickly. To avoid this happening to your project, consider these ten signs of poor Project Management.
Lack of Communication- It doesn’t matter if everyone is qualified and ready to work hard, if there is little or no communication between team members or anybody else associated with the project, the project is going to suffer.
Low Interest- If a project is going to be successful, the individuals involved in building that success must share an interest in it. If you constantly notice team members not showing up for meetings, avoiding participating in discussions, refusing to give feedback, or just simply being low-energy, there is definitely something wrong.
Too many Setbacks- A successful project should always be moving forward with minimal setbacks. If you are noticing that things are moving too slowly or worse, not moving at all, it’s a good sign that something is wrong and needs to be immediately addressed.
Milestones not being met- No matter how small or insignificant a milestone may seem, if it is not met, it should be a cause for concern. Don’t ignore a missed milestone.
Overtime Overload- Your team members should not be putting in a large amount of overtime. If your project is coming along as it should be, there should be no need for excessive overtime hours. So if you constantly see your team members staying late, it’s time to investigate why. Overtime can lead to exhaustion and poor health , which is not going to be good for anyone.
Diverting Resources- When planning your project, you likely allocated your human resources wisely by placing certain team members with certain skills in certain positions. If you start noticing that these people are straying away from their assigned roles because they are needed elsewhere, it’s a sign that something may be wrong with your project.
No Room for Bad News- A good and functioning project team needs to be able to accept and deal with bad news. If your project team is constantly choosing to avoid the reality of bad news, there is definitely a problem. No project is perfect in any of its stages, and it is important for your entire team to understand this.
Lack of Responsibility- If a Project Manager is constantly avoiding responsibility for mistakes, ,that is a definite problem. It’s simple; if you are leading a team and making critical decisions, you need to be able to deal with those decisions and take responsibility if things go wrong.
Lack of Attention to Detail- Even the smallest mistakes such as clerical errors in documents should be addressed and corrected. Cutting corners should never be acceptable in a strong and successful project. You need to remember to always sweat the small stuff.
Inaccurate Cost Estimations- If you find that you are constantly underestimating costs within your project, you need to address that problem right away. Running out of resources is a sure fire way to stop your project dead in its tracks, so make sure this does not happen.
